What is Leadership & Governance?

Leadership is about planning, setting goals and priorities, to get results through mentoring, coaching, empowering and supporting others.  Leadership is about achieving the goals and priorities; what is a good leader?  Leaders are role models.  Leaders ‘walk the walk’ and ‘talk the talk’. Leaders have integrity and take personal responsibility for their actions. Leaders have good listening skills, leaders are honest and trustworthy. Leaders have good communication skills and have the ability to communicate with a wide range of people.

Leaders have good values in life.  Good values means that you show respect for each other and treat people with mutual respect.  If you show respect to other people, you will receive respect.  This is about showing mutual respect to each other.  Leaders have good behavioural patterns in life. There are many types of leaders; leaders come from all walks of life.  Leadership is about being accountable and transparent.

Governance or corporate governance can be referred to as the role of the board of directors within the organisation. Good governance means the ownership of the organisation.  The board is responsible for ensuring that the strategic plan or mission statement of the organisation is carried out. Within any organisation you could have shareholders or corporate partners, then you have the Board of Directors, then there is the CEO and staff.  The Board of Directors take ownership of writing policies and procedures within the organisation according to the strategic plan… The Board of Directors should ensure that there are open lines of communication between the CEO and staff within the organisation to ensure that their expectations, policies and procedures are adhered to. The Board of Directors are the decision-makers and they implement the process by which decisions are made.
